Handling Tough Terrain And Tight Spots In Construction

Handling Tough Terrain And Tight Spots In Construction

Working in construction can often take you far away from the neat and even terrain of the construction site, and can involve uneven ground, working on coasts, in forests, and in all manner of places. As such, if you’re running a crew, you need to know how to be able to mitigate a wide range of different kinds of worksites, especially when it comes to moving heavy materials. Here are a few tools that can help you do that.

Preparing the site

You want to make sure that, regardless of what heavy machinery or equipment you might use, the site and team are prepared as best as possible. Risk mitigation on any construction site means that you have to ensure the work around those sites stops and that you’re using safety installations like barriers to make sure that the area is inaccessible and that your team is aware of the potential danger. Ensure that you’re accounting for other factors like the weather and how it affects the site, as well. Otherwise, bringing in new machinery can just make things more dangerous.

Pallets are your pals

Trying to move objects or materials in bulk can be difficult, especially if what you’re trying to move is non-standard in shape. However, when that happens, there are tools that can help make them a lot easier to move. For instance, pallets can serve as a stabilizing force, allowing you to better control heavy masses and make them easier to lift for a wider range of vehicles. This is especially true if you’re working with tighter spaces.

When you can’t get in from the ground

Sometimes, getting into a certain location is not only tough on foot, but it might be impossible by vehicle. This accounts for not only tough terrain but also installations that are many feet up. To that end, you might have to think of another approach: getting in from the sky. Helicopter lifting services are used across a range of industries for just that reason. A lot of care has to be taken to ensure the right model of the helicopter to lift different loads, and work has to be done to make sure that the goods being lifted are easy and accessible from the air, too.

Mastering tough terrain

Perhaps you’re able to access the spots that you need from the ground, but that ground is tricky, uneven, and tough for the average vehicle to get over. On the smaller end of things, there are sack trucks and barrows that can allow your workers to get into them on foot and lift what goods they can. If you want to lift something that’s going to require more than one person to do it, however, then you might be looking more at vehicles like dump trucks that are specifically suited to navigating over rough terrain.

When it comes to tough terrain and tight spots, the best option is typically to find the machinery that helps you navigate them as safely as possible. Hopefully, the tips above give you a good idea of how to do that.
